"Letters To Mom"
The “Letters to Mom” section of this website started with a simple email from my Mom. “Hi Rick, I haven’t seen you in awhile. How’s the diving going? Love Mom.” I answered with the 07-27-02 Losing Jane (U.S.S.Wisconsin Wreck) Letter. It didn’t have the pictures etc. but she really enjoyed it and would frequently send an email prodding me for another story. Even though she past away with cancer in the spring of 2004, now and again I’ll send a “Letter to Mom” to my friends and family.
These stories are true though I haven’t been nicknamed the “Master Story Teller” for nothing. The names of the “divers” have been changed. This is because one of my team figured her family would read these stories and worry that, even though she is a generally safe diver, she was doing something very dangerous.
Now for my personal philosophy. Some of these stories involve mistakes. Not only mine, but other divers as well. I will attest I’ve accidentally (and sometimes on purpose) done some bone headed things underwater. Most divers don’t mention their mistakes or just cover them up with an excuse that comes out as “I meant to do that” or “It wasn’t my fault.” On another site I read a line that impressed me.
“it is my belief that the living should tell of their own mistakes, as we know the dead keep theirs with them.” and “I take the full blame for my mistake, some of you may have made similar mistakes and being alone as I was you may have chose to keep it to yourself, by doing this you take the chance away that someone else could learn from this, my friends have rode me hard as I told the truth, maybe everyone should tell their own mistakes. To let your EGO stop you from telling is worst than the mistake itself.”
Hopefully divers will read these stories and learn what was done wrong and even what was done right and learn from it. If not, just sit back and enjoy the stories.
